The opening program for September, 2007 was a great talk by Dale Hoyt Palfrey on the State of the Lake Chapala Watershed. The good news that the Lake levels are up and that the Lake is doing better than ever was enthusiastically received by a large audience and there were many questions asked and answered. The October program was a terrific Thanksgiving dinner on October 8th at the Nueva Posada. Turkey and all the trimmings were provided by Chef Lorraine and her capable staff who served a fine dinner to 139 people without a hitch. Chef and her staff were warmly applauded when they made their bows at the end of the dinner. Our honoured guest was Lic. Kathryn Aleong, Canadian Consul and Trade Commissioner. Ms. Aleong was presented with an honourary membership to the Canadian Club. The other good news is that Canadian Club membership is up with more newcomers moving to the Lakeside and many members renewing their membership. The November program was a talk by Karl Barnhardt who lives here at Lakeside on "Securing Your Casa". Lots of interesting information on the subject of security. Our December program was our Christmas party and everyone had a great time. It was a pot-luck with everyone bringing their favourite appetizer. We had Christmas carols by Los Cantantes del Lago. A fun program. Our January program included a talk on "Traveling in Western Mexico" by well known travel writer Tony Burton. Over 300 people attended this talk and lots of extra chairs were made available. February brought Dan McTeague the MP for Scarborough-Pickering East who is the Liberal critic for Consular Affairs. His talk on Canadians abroad and what your government can do for you if you find yourself in trouble was also informative and well attended. Also in February we had the pleasure of a visit from our Ambassador to Mexico Guillermo Rishchynski and his wife Jeanette Portillo Tinoco. Mr. Rishchynski spoke about Canadians in the Lakeside area, referring to them as "pioneers" and the projected "explosion" of visitors and retirees from Canada to Mexico in the coming years. |
